Site Design/Urban Planning

Site Design: Marblehead, MA

Tasked with creating as many housing units on a particular parcel of land, given the common constraints dictated in zoning, including: set backs, density restrictions, FAR stipulations and parking requirements.  Further, the building types and designs were pre-determined.
Outcome: maximized housing units by creating underground parking - a concept unique to this design and not considered in other designs in the class.

Model Building

As part of a project manager assistant role at an architecture firm, I completed the topographical representation of a parcel in Haleakala, HI. During college I completed a similar project to determine paths of water runoff - this unexpected skill proved helpful to the architecture firm looking to design a school on a rather difficult parcel. The elevation changes within the small area were quite dramatic, and the model represented the unique challenges - and opportunities - to constructing a building on such a site.

Project Development

My first full project in urban design was to develop a project site in a way that utilized abutting resources and was consistent with the wishes of the city. In this case, my project team and I developed a mixed use project on a predetermined site in Cambridge, MA. The site was close to a subway station and accessible by car, however, it was an eyesore to those traveling on Route 2. The City of Cambridge wanted the site developed in a creative way that enhanced its image from the road, and incorporated uses that would beneficial to many members of the community. The resulting design accomplishes these tasks, and many others.
